Actuarial Science Qualification Pathways

SOA (USA)

Associate first, then Fellowship.

Associate (ASA)

Five stages. Each one lists what it takes to complete it.

VEE credit is given by the SOA for an SOA-approved course.

ASA

Complete every stage above to become an Associate of the Society of Actuaries.

Fellowship (FSA)

Four technical courses, including a two-course sequence (101 and 201) in one practice area, then DMAC and FAC.

FSA

Complete the ASA, four technical courses, then DMAC and FAC to become a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

IFoA (UK)

Associate first, then Fellowship.

Associate

Two stages: the Core Principles and the Core Practices.

The IFoA also requires its Stage 1 and Stage 2 Professionalism courses. The IFoA runs them and you book and pay for them with the IFoA, so they are not in the fees below.

Fellowship

Choose two Specialist Principles subjects and one Specialist Advanced subject.

Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA)

A global credential in enterprise risk management for actuaries.

CERA is governed by the CERA Global Association and awarded through member actuarial bodies, so there is no single exam: each body sets its own route. The Society of Actuaries calls it the Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries calls it the Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary.

Through the SOA

Complete most of the ASA requirements, plus the CFE 101 Enterprise Risk Management course and the Enterprise Risk Management module. You do not need the Fellowship.

Through the IFoA

Become an Associate or Fellow, pass SP9 Enterprise Risk Management, and attend the IFoA's CERA seminar.

Why It Matters

Qualification is more than an examination.

Actuarial qualifications combine examinations, applied modelling and professional practice. They build the technical, analytical and professional capabilities that support a career in insurance, pensions, investment and risk.
